Tana

She had seen fires before but to have seen how the townspeople practiced as if it had been real was still odd to her, even if she understood the importance of it. Some panicked like a herd of hunted caribou when the fire breathed down their necks. From where she came there wasn't normally a lot of deep forests that easily could lit up like a huge campfire. It was only in summer her people came inland to hunt. Tana stroked the silky mane of Tulrujuq. The long maned female had done well and had went into the flames without fear. Tana wasn't sure how the judged had graded them but the spirits knew she didn't really cared what they said.

Tulrujuq had proven herself in the eyes of the spirits, and her. Now they had seeked themselves some privacy, fresh air and the open land just outside the brawl grounds. There had been friendly games in her old tribe too, but it was never about pride or who was best in the sense of winning fame and fortune. It was to show the spirits that you had learned enough, to survive on your own, and to help your people survive, to show you hadn't forgotten their valuable lessons. The long mane turned her head and nibbled at her toe.

Tana smiled.

“Are you bored, Tul? Or are you just wanting me to pay attention to you? I guess we should do some good than just standing around don't you think? Perhaps we should take a look around...there are still some classes left and perhaps we can pick up some tips on how to do it better next time...”

Kalla

Kalla stretched her arms high above her head and let them fall in place behind her head as she walked away from the fire drill with Xayam. Aya, a marked black tokota with bright pink paint on her front paws and ears trailed slightly behind kalla with a happy bounce in her step. She was new to the pack but was eager to prove her worth, she was proud of her display of bravery in the fire drill and hoped that her handler felt the same. She looked up at the brown haired woman she was walking next to.

Kalla looked down at her and smiled “Great job girl!” she responded to the stare she received from her tokota. As they continued to walk away back toward their home they spotted Tana and Tul off in the distance. They had participated with them in the earlier drills. Kalla waved and called out to Tana before jogging over to her.

“Man that was something intense wasn’t it?” Kalla questioned Tana as she approached her. “Thanks for partnering up with me, I was unsure how the drills would go, but you and Tul were amazing. Aya here probably burned a few hairs.” She joked and laughed at her own comment.

Aya trailed behind in a hurried trott. She was eager to see her partner in the drills again. She ran past Kalla  over to Tul and softly bumped her with her head as a greetings. She wagged her tail and panted happily.

Tana

She had just slided off the tokotas back to give Tul some chance to run around on her own when she heard Kalla’s voice. She smiled towards the young woman. There was an energy around her spirit, as energetic and happy like a newborn calf that just managed to master it's legs.

“Spirits greet you well, Kalla... and yes...the fire was hot.” Still there were words she couldn't quite grasp the meaning of, it was clear as a summer sky that fire was intensely hot, it gave you burns and could kill most in it's way. But she didn't say anything. Tulrujuq greeted the tokota with her normal calm grace. Tana’s short maned  male Kinguyakkii would probably have wished for a more submissive approach. But not the long maned female. Tana had never seen Tul do anything reprimanding - unless truly needed.

“I think we both gained to be together, as it should... nobody should do something for their gain alone...it's greedy and something the spirits don't like...only darkness come from greed...” Tana shrugged like there suddenly was a icy wind despite that the spring - and warmer winds - were more common now than two months ago.

Everything was sprouting green and it was just a question of time before the world once more was filled with new life. It was something Tana both looked forward to - and dreaded. The woman patted Tul and let Kalla’s tokota sniff her outstretched hand.

“Are you ready for the other classes you are in?”

Kalla

‘Are you ready for the other classes you are in?’ Tana’s words rung in Kalla’s head. Her shoulders dropped and her head sunk backwards as she looked to the sky and groaned loudly. Thats right, I have other classes. She thought to herself. Her hand smacked her face and slowly slid down the front of her face dragging her features with it. “No” She said reluctantly.

Xayam was alerted to the woman's dismay with her loud groan and leaned over to lick her hand in comfort. She was unsure why her human companion would be so morose when they had done a fabulous job. In her mind at least and in the present company, there should be no reason to be upset. She whimpered softly at Kalla to announce her displeasure with Kalla’s current attitude.

Kalla petted Aya once more to reassure her that she was not in any danger nor was she upset. Not really, Kalla was more stressed, these were her first trials, her first competitions and she was going in with an equally inexperienced tokota. Her pack needed to learn the ways of the tribe, and they were rather new.

“No.” She repeated herself, speaking to Tana once more “I’m not...BUT, would you like to go relax somewhere before the next set of trials? It's beginning to warm up, i'm sure there is a great place to just relax and not worry about the next set of trials?”

Tana

Another smile, one meant to calm the other. “Do not feel worry, Kalla...while the fire could have killed, it was under a controlled form...a test of sorts...for a time when it's not. For that time one need to know what to do, not hesitate nor think of contests such as this one. Then it won't be awards or trinkets...then only life and survival will matter.” Tul nudged her nose under Tanas arm, and then licked the woman's cheek.

“When I was a little girl we had games...but it was never like this...more to show the spirits that we...have learned from them...how to survive...and that we still honored them showing this through song and...I would guess you would call them prayers. We gave gifts to Sedna for her to continue to gift us of the riches of the sea... that Tarqeq...” Tana glanced up to the skies like she could see the moon's pale disc being in it's normal place even if it was his sister that roamed the sky during the day “...continues to bring all the landliving animals to us.” She had a special relationship with the man in the moon.

Tul wagged her tail as she moved off from her handler, inviting the other to follow. She could tell that Tana wouldn't ask anything of her, that she was allowed to roam a little as she pleased. The long maned female bounced off a few steps before looking back over her shoulder as to see if the other followed.

Kalla

Aya ‘s earl perked up as the long mane invited her to go play. Her tail wagged just before she left Kalla’s side to chase after her friend. She trotted  after tul, when she reached her, aya dropped down to her elbows with her rear high in the air, tail wagging furiously. She wanted to play, it had been a long day filled with hard work and she wanted to relax and have some fun.

Kalla thought for a moment about what Tana had said as she watched the two tokotas play. “So this has been a long standing tradition that has evolved over time?” she questioned her freind. Kalla had never seen these trials before, mostly because she traveled with tradesmen as a  very young girl, never really having a place to call home. She called a caravan home, and home moved daily. But she was glad to  be here.

Kalla looked around her, all the flowers were beginning to return, the two tokotas, Aya and Tul, were running and trampling most of them as they played. Kalla was glad that winter was coming to an end, she was never fond of the cold weather. It was always so bland in color, just white and greys all over, it was harsh, and unforgiving. Life was returning to the land and that was something everyone could appreciate.
